Rare Look Inside the Pixar Archives
I still can’t believe I was inside the Pixar Archives and it was absolutely amazing. When my invite arrived to visit Pixar studios I was a ball of emotions. I’ll dive into that story in my post about my visit to the campus, but let’s just say it’s very special to me. I couldn’t wait to step foot on the campus and I have to admit it was as amazing as I had hoped. A tour of Pixar Archives was added to our itinerary and I did a happy dance.
Who doesn’t want a super rare behind the scenes look at the artwork, scripts, and more from some of their favorite movies? We walked into the building and was greeted by our tour guide, Lead Archivist and Pixar Historian Christine Freeman. She gave us all the inside information about all things Pixar. you could see the excitement on her face when she talked about the different movies and the special collection she’s responsible for preserving.
We weren’t allowed to take photos in the archives, which is usually the case when you visit any archives. When we first entered there was a sticky mat on the ground to pull dirt off our shoes. The archivists have to keep the collection safe at all times, so visitors aren’t allowed to touch or get too close to the items being shown.
The archives serve as a way to preserve anything the folks at Pixar Studios deem important. So there were pieces of concept art, statues, and figures that never made it into the film. Custom created cases are made to protect the statues created by the sculptors, so they don’t break or suffer damage when being moved or transported to different places.
If you look at the photos you see that the archivists are handling original artwork with white gloves. That’s to make sure no oils or anything on their hands is transferred to the artwork. It’s another method of preserving and keeping them safe.
We learned so much in the short time we spent in the archives, and honestly, if I ever had the opportunity to visit again I would in a heartbeat. It’s a must for any Pixar fan just to get that background story about the films.
