Why You Should Watch Disney’s Oscar Nominations Before Awards
The Oscar nominations has been out for about a week now and Disney received 9 nominations this year. This is the second year that I feel like I am beyond excited for a movie and I really want them to win. Last year it was Frozen, after meeting with the filmmakers and learning about the film I really wanted them to win and when they did I was beyond excited.
The Oscars airs on Live on Sunday, February 22nd at 7 PM ET and 4 PM PT on ABC Television network. I plan to be tuned in to catch the awards and to also cheer on all the Disney nominations. This year the nominations for Disney includes Best Animated Feature (Big Hero 6), Best Animated Short (Feast), Best Production Design (Into the Woods), Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy), two for Best Costume Design (Into the Woods, Maleficent), and two for Best Visual Effects (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Actress Meryl Streep also received a nomination for Best Actress In a Supporting Role for her work as the Witch in Into the Woods.
I have lots of reasons to be cheering for some of these Disney nominations this year, after all I did attend the red carpet premiere of Big Hero 6 in LA last year but that’s not the only reason why you should watch Disney’s Oscar nominations before the awards show. This is great place to start with my reasons for you to check out these movies before the awards. Big Hero 6 will make you laugh, cry, and see it all over again. It’s a great family feature and you can purchase it on Disney Movies Anywhere on February 3rd. You can own the digital version early and see it before the awards show. Perfect for a family movie night, it’s a great story of how people deal with loss and the power of friendship. I have lots of great reasons to want this film to win. I had the opportunity to meet the directors Chris Williams and Don Hall, and talk to voice talent Genesis Rodriguez and Jamie Chung. This movie is empowering and it’s a must see.
When you check out Big Hero 6 you will get the see Feast before the movie. I had a chance to see this short and I absolutely adored it. I may or may not have cried watching it in the El Capitan Theatre during the premiere. It’s such a touching short and when I found out that this short was created by some of the team that created Paperman I knew I would love it. I have to say that this may be my favorite Disney short thus far. Plus you can check out my post about creating a Disney Short to learn more about how they bring these amazing shorts to screen.
You can’t be a Marvel fan and haven’t seen Captain America The Winter Soldier yet and if you haven’t, you certainly can rent it from Redbox tonight and have a movie night. You won’t regret it. I can certainly see why this movie was nominated in the Best Visual Effects category because there are some stunning visuals. I don’t however recommend this movie just for visuals but because you have to see all the movies from Marvel to see how they connect to each other. They all are interwoven and connected in so many ways. My blogger buddy Becky at What U Talkin’ Bout Willis visited the set and had a chance to meet Chris Evans and you can follow along her adventures here, plus check out all her Captain America posts as well. My recent trip took us on the set of Agent Carter and if you follow along with the movies you know Agent Carter was Captain America’s love interest in the first movie. I love these tie in from Marvel and with Avengers Age of Ultron coming this summer you won’t want to miss this installment from Marvel.
Guardians of the Galaxy received two nominations, one in the same category with Captain America. While they both can’t win I do hope one of those two wins. You can also rent Guardians of the Galaxy from Redbox currently and I highly recommend you get it for a weekend movie night. My kids loved this movie, I thought with aliens, and space ships and explosions they would be scared but they just loved it. We saw it three times already and they still ask us to rent it for them again. This was surely an unexpected hit for us but we all loved it in my family and the awesomeness of Guardians doesn’t just end with the movie the soundtrack is also a must have. I play it at least once a week. With an awesome soundtrack and an even better movie you just can’t lose by adding this to your watch list.
I don’t know anyone who didn’t want to catch Maleficent this past summer, it was on my list since I saw the news about it two years ago. Nominated in the Best Costume category, this movie has lots of great costumes for movie watchers to enjoy during the movie. You can also rent Maleficent right now so you really shouldn’t have a reason to not check it out, make it a Disney movie marathon weekend and rent all the titles you can. You won’t regret it at all. We really enjoyed this version of a story we all know so well. It was quite refreshing the take Disney took on the movie by focusing on Maleficent instead of Aurora. Although she’s villainous, she’s still likable and certainly could give Ursula and Cruella a run for their money at being the best Disney Villain. Fellow Baltimore blogger Di of FSM Blog attended a special blogger event and she has all kinds of Maleficent goodies on her blog. Be sure to check her out because she even has an interview with Angelina Jolie on her blog.
I looked forwards to Into the Woods all year last year and when I finally saw it in the movies I just loved it. Nominated in the same category as Maleficent for Best Costume, this musical is a winner in my mind for a million different reasons. There’ so many great things I could say to encourage you to see this if you can before the Oscars, but I’ll just start with the most important – the music. Yes this is a musical, it has lots of music, more music that you think and if you don’t like musicals then you probably won’t love Into the Woods but you should still give it a chance. One this isn’t your typical Disney happily ever after movie. It’s Grimm Brothers stuff, it’s gritty, real and anything but happily ever after. My husband and I saw this for date night and we really enjoyed it. We laughed our butts off at the Princes in the movie, they were over dramatic and super funny. My husband said this is Disney for adults and it was a great story and again the music is amazing. I can’t wait for it to arrive on Blu-Ray because I’ll be watching it quite often. With a A List Stellar cast you can’t expect nothing less than greatness. My blogger buddy Susan of Susan’s Disney Family attended the blogger event for Into the Woods and she has all kinds of great information to share on her blog including her interview with Meryl Strep – I was jelly but super excited for her.
I hope you do check out all these Disney nomination and remember to tune in on February 22nd on AC to check out the awards show live.
