On The Set of black-ish
It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long but two weeks ago I attended my press trip with Disney and ABC Television. Part of the trip included a set visit to the black-ish set on the ABC Studios lot. I already shared about my interview with show creator Kenya Barris and now I’ll give you a behind the scenes sneak peek from the set.
Being on a TV set is kind of surreal. I felt very weird because the house actually looked and felt like a home, aside from the missing roof. It also made me feel odd about taking photos all over their house. Please excuse my photos they were taken with my phone but I wanted to show you some parts of the house that stood out to me.
We walked into the house and Maxine Shepard, Production Designer started our set tour. She showed us the how they would shoot the outside of the house but also let us in on a secret. There’s a house with the same exterior in Sherman Oaks, CA that they shoot exterior scenes when they need to shoot outside.
The stairs really leads to nowhere. I have always wondered about this but it really isn’t anything up there. All the rooms are on the same floor.
The details in this home was so great. They even had family photos hanging all around the house. Most of the kids at their current ages but they do have some that are from when they were younger.
Even this reminder board with keys, I’m not this organized but it’s something you would find in lots of homes.
Maxine shared that some of the items in the home are from prop houses and others are from places we all shop at like IKEA and Target. So while you’re doing your shopping you may see pieces from the set in store.
Dre and Rainbow’s closets are to die for. Dre’s show wall is amazing. It’s actually better than Bow’s. He had all kinds of sneakers in there, sneaker heads would be in love with a shoe wall like that. If I ever get the space I’ll have to make my show wall like that. Just to prove to my husband he actually owns more shoes than I do and he doesn’t need more. Not that I think it would work but just for the reminder aspect that he owns lots of shoes.
Zoe’s room was my favorite of all the kids room. It was fun and colorful but it didn’t look childish. I loved the wall art it’s amazing. They put so much details into designing all the rooms, especially the kids rooms. Check out my new blogger buddy Lisa from Mom the the Side set visit post. She got great shots of the twins bedrooms.
The kitchen was my favorite part of the whole house. I loved it. This is a kitchen you dream of. I just loved the two ovens, all the cabinet space it was huge. I could see myself cooking up all kinds of storms in that kitchen. After we finished the house set we were heading over to the office set. Myself and three other bloggers was following our guide, she turned to get the rest of the group and all of a sudden it was all silent. We realized the set was closed and they were actually filming. We overheard a conversation with Anthony (Dre) with his co-workers, the topic of conversation was “Stool Softeners” and “How black and white people age differently”. We were trying so hard to not burst out laughing during the filming. They even gave us a quick peep at the set but we had to leave to meet the other bloggers. I can’t wait until we get more details about that episode.
Terri-Ann at Cookies & Clogs snapped both these photos for us. Be sure to check out her behind the scenes set visit post. She has some awesome shots.
