Honestly, even as an adult I struggle with defining friendship. In life your story could either be the path to making friends being easy, or a difficult path. Regardless of your own personal path Ron’s Gone Wrong gave a whole new meaning to the term friendship. This is a story that resonates with so many of us in various ways, and that’s why it’s a must see feature.
At the heart of the movie we see Barney played by Jack Dylan Grazer struggle to fit in at school because he’s the odd kid in the whole school. Where everyone else has their own digital “best friend out of the box,” he is still wishing for one at his upcoming birthday celebration.
He opts to not invite any of his classmates to his birthday celebration because he fears no one will show. It is heartbreaking, Barney though is more focused on receiving his own digital best friend.
Real World Characters
Unfortunately, he does not receive one, but his dad noticing his disappointment finds a way to get Barney his own device. There we see an unusual friendship develop and a bond built between two characters unlike any other characters in the film. Just like everyday life, we meet the popular girl who is all about social media. Deep down though, she is fearful of people not liking her and it pushes her need for acceptance.
There’s the boy who has it all and his crew of followers who do whatever he says. He uses his material things to gain popularity and can be a bully at times. Then there’s the kids who just follow their own lead.
An Unlikely Friendship
When Barney gets Ron, their friendship is questions since Ron is not like the other devices. He is unique, that feature makes him a liability in the eyes of the company that created him. Thankfully Barney does not give up on his friend, and in the process he gains some more amazing ones as well.
About Ron’s Gone Wrong
Things go hilariously awry when Barney, a socially awkward middle-schooler, receives a malfunctioning, digitally connected device that’s supposed to be his “best friend out of the box.” In this action-packed animated story set against the backdrop of the social media age, a boy and his robot discover the wonderful messiness of true friendship.
