5 Steps to Publishing Your Own Book

August 2, 2017 By Nickida

5 Steps to Publishing Your Own Book

Not too long ago, the thought of creating your very own book was very much a pipe dream. Publishers had to be very selective with the books that they went with, and so the opportunities to get your own written creation into stores were severely limited.

Nowadays, however, virtually everyone can produce and publish their own book. Thanks to the rise of eBooks and new methods of publishing, it has never been easier to share your book with the public.

On the whole, it is still tricky to actually produce a book of your own. That said, read on below for five important steps to take before publishing your book.

1. Pick your topic

Perhaps surprisingly, choosing a topic is actually one of the most difficult parts of the process for writers. It is also the most important thing to contemplate when creating a book.

If you’re going with a fictional topic, try and choose something that is both interesting for you to write about and original – although the latter is understandably difficult these days due to the saturation of stories and ideas! For a non-fiction book, ensure you are able to complete enough research to do the subject matter/s justice.

2. Add the content of your book

Although it is pointing out the obvious: if you have no content, you have no book.

Going about writing your book is typically a tricky process, however. Trying to structure the book so that it flows seamlessly requires plenty of trial and error, as does figuring out what details to include and what to hold back on.

It also goes without saying that everything with the book should be grammatically sound. Even if you look over the book on multiple occasions and use grammar-checking tools, errors might still slip through the cracks. If possible, ponder the option of hiring a proofreader to tidy up and check your written work.

3. Create an eye-catching cover

The importance of a cover should never be underestimated. The cover is the gateway to sales, and the way for potential customers to get a brief picture as to what your book entails.

As for creating a cover that will capture the attention, there are plenty of options available. Along with being able to hire a professional freelancer, you can also use free book cover maker software if you have a solid idea in mind (and a tight budget).

4. Choose a publishing option

How will you publish your book? Will you opt for a submitting your book to a small publisher, or going with a crowdfunding option? Perhaps you will decide to self-publish your book?

Whatever you decide to go with, you should complete plenty of research before settling on a publishing option that you think will best suit your needs.

5. Spread the word

Once the book is complete and ready to purchase, it’s time to put on your promoting hat! Spread the word via social media platforms, book-centric forums, and other relevant online sources. Also, don’t be scared to ask YouTubers or book websites to consider your book for review.
