The SHMILY Story

January 17, 2013 By Nickida

I want to share with you a beautiful story and the origin of SHMILY coins.  It’s a very cute and lovely story about love and how we can spread it with our family members.

The story starts with a couple who started playing a special game of their own.  They played it from since they were dating and were still playing it over fifty years later.  The goal of the game was to write “SHMILY” in a surprise place for the the other person to find it.  This couple took turns leaving the word “SHMILY” all around their house and as soon as one of them found it they found a new place to hide it again.  The word appeared in flour and sugar for who ever was cooking the next meal, written in steam on the bathroom mirror so it would appear again and again after hot baths.  It was found on dashboards, car seats, in shoes, under pillows and even on the last sheet of toilet paper.  They shared it with their children, who in turn shared it with theirs and when one their grandchildren realized that it was more than just a game but a way of life.  They shared the story and the meaning of SHMILY: See How Much I Love You.  That story inspired Scott and Jen Ertl was inspired to create SHMILY coins so we could all know this story and introduce the game to our family.  The original author of the SHMILY Story is Laura Hammond.

I’ve shared before how much I love my family and how much I enjoy being a mother.  I was so touched by this story and the idea behind the coins I couldn’t wait to get started with my children.  We received five coins and I started by hiding two coins; one in each of my school aged children’s lunch bags.  They came home excited to find the wooden coin with the heart on it.  They asked me what it meant and I told them what it means and it was their turn to hide them so me and daddy could find it.  They are only four and five so I gave them some ideas and the game has been on for a week now.  Our coins has been hidden in cabinets, draws, under pillows, the bathroom, closets, shoes, coat pockets, shelves and so many different places.  What surprised me was when my son wanted to hide them in family member houses and share love with them as well.  We gave one to their God-Mother because they really wanted her to know how much they loved her and we are hiding one at their grandparent’s house this weekend.  Imagine all the fun you can have with these coins.  With Valentine’s Day just around the corner its a great gift option for cards.  You can send them to friends and family members so they can also introduce the game to their families.  Plus the coins are very affordable.

I hope you give these a try and don’t just stop at Valentine’s day for gift ideas.  This is a great items to add in party loot bags, birthday cards, wedding favors, shower gifts, the list could go on and on.  Its a great story and item to share.
