I admit that I am a mother of three and I have not figured the best way to get my children to sleep. It could be that I have poor sleep habits and so does my husband, or that I love cuddling with my kids. Even with my four and five year olds, if I have a “sleep over” with them I like to cuddle them so they know they are loved but the problem is it doesn’t help with sleep. I know I created bad habits that I now want to break. I want to make sure my children are getting enough rest, so they can perform at their best. So getting the opportunity to review the latest from Harvey Karp, M.D. – The Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep – is something I really wanted to do and hoped that I’d learn something to help me get started down the right track to sleep.
First off I have to say I love the way this book is written, it’s like the author knew I was a peek ahead kind of gal. So what did he do? The first few chapters of the book are just basic about sleep, cycles and other information about sleeping. Then the book is broken down by age groups. So if you have a newborn you can read that section and then wait to read the rest once you have reached those ages. All my children fell into the one to five section so I saw no point in reading about newborn sleep tips, but that’s perfectly fine because the book is written for you to do just that skip to your section after the first part. In the first section alone I learned so much and sleep and the different cycles. I didn’t even know there were different kinds of REM cycles.
I’ve learned about sleep cues and finding out what works for my children as a cue that it’s time for bed. Now I understand why my toddler jumps everywhere he goes instead of walking. I didn’t even realize there was good white noise until reading this book. I know I wasn’t powering down (turning off electronics) before bedtime. Even now I still sleep with the television on, I just turn down the volume. The best part of this book for me is that it’s not just about sleep. It really helps you understand your children and their personalities, how to change their behavior, it is helping me work on patience and in the process teach it to them. It’s a definite must have for parents of children five years and under, especially if you struggle with getting your child to sleep.
