The Biggest Risks For Tourists in NYC

October 20, 2020 By Nickida

For many, a trip to New York City is placed high on their bucket list. The skyline, the shopping, the food, the entire New York experience is one that can’t be rivaled or replicated anywhere else in the world. If you’re planning a trip to the City That Never Sleeps, you may be wondering how you’re going to cram in everything you want to see and do – it’s pretty much impossible to experience all of NYC in one single trip.

However, it’s also common for visitors to feel a little anxious before they head to New York. Not knowing what to expect from one of the world’s most densely populated cities could land you in trouble. To help you out, I’ve gathered together what are considered to be the biggest risks for tourists in NYC. After all, the more you know – the safer you’ll be!

Trips, Slips and Falls

New York City is bustling with people who have somewhere to be and if you’re in the way then you’ll soon know about it. If you’re taking in the sights and moving at a slower pace you can expect to be jostled around by disgruntled New Yorkers who just want to get to work on time. It’s because of these busy streets that you’re more likely to slip, trip and hurt yourself. Speak with PI lawyers with an office in Manhattan if you’ve been injured in an accident and it wasn’t your fault.

Cracks in the pavement, uneven sidewalks, dangerous grilles and manhole covers, even being shunted into the path of oncoming traffic… If you want to take a selfie, take in the sights or maybe just move a little slower than the average speed of a New Yorker, stick to the right!

Getting Lost

Whilst getting lost isn’t necessarily a hazard, in NYC losing your way could land you in trouble or at least leave you terrified and overwhelmed. It’s easy to get turned around or take the wrong turn down a side street, which is why planning your route is essential for visitors.

Whatever you decide to go and see or experience, plan your route from your hotel and stick to it. If you do find yourself lost, try to remain calm, stick to densely populated areas and ask someone for help. Don’t forget to keep the address of your hotel written down somewhere and consider downloading a map of the area so you can access it easily.

And Finally, Scams

You can expect pickpockets and muggers in any city anywhere in the world. However, you should also be on the lookout for scammers and swindlers. These people will try to get you to part with your cash. This could be accidentally posing for photos with someone in a costume in Times Square and having to pay up. Or someone trying to sell you a Gucci handbag at an unbelievable price. A panhandler asking for donations or a taxicab without a meter…if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Keep your money in your wallet!
