Ten Minutes with Zoe Saldana
Ten minutes may not seem like much, however when you’re on an active set it’s a lifetime. We were waiting for Zoe Saldana to finish filming a scene from the upcoming movie Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. She was one of the last people we talked with on set, and it was one of the most inspiring interviews I’ve had to date.
We started immediately asking her about the movie and how she felt being back on set with her fellow co-stars.
It feels good. It feels really, really good. It’s like coming back to like a family of people that you already broke the ice with, you feel super safe being yourself and trying new things. Working with a director that is super supportive is great. It’s still a dude’s movie, and he’s inviting women to come and kick dudes’ asses. So I signed up. Plus I am doing a lot more of my own stunts.
During the interviews we had a chance to see some of the filming on set. Most of the film is done on a blue screen so it didn’t look like much but it was still very exciting. While on set we noticed how close Chris and Zoe seemed with each other. They were laughing and sharing jokes with their other casemates. We asked her about the friendship between the pair.
We’re both parents of wonderful little kid boys, and we’re constantly bouncing ideas between each other. He shares with me how his wife is handling being part of a family that’s like a traveling troop and she has to also stay and work on her own career.
I also share that experience with my husband and I have to make these like ultimate sacrifices because one of us have to travel with work and the other one is like okay I’m working remotely with you, cause at the end of the day it’s to not be apart.
Zoe went on to share that as a young girl she was staved looking for female heros. It’s what motivated her to become one herself as an adult. She went on to talk about women taking control of their health by being more active and physical. She even shared some of her fitness routine with us.
It requires determination and a lot of discipline. I did not want to hate myself and I did not want to start fantasizing of what I used to be. I wanted to work with what I have. I gained 65 pounds. I’m not comparing myself to everybody but if my experience can be inspirational for you guys, I’m a killer. I don’t just approach it like I’m going to start Sunday. I’m going to start Monday because Sunday, we’re having the barbeque. I’m like no fucking way. [LAUGHTER] No fucking way cause to me it’s scarier to look at myself while I’m brushing my teeth and have 10 things to say about myself that I hate. I don’t want to live like that. We’re gifts. We’re fucking unique. We’re special. We’ve got to work. We work for everybody else every single fucking day. You work for yourself. Be self-focused.
If you think she’s not eating you’d be wrong. Due to her hispanic culture food is a big part of her life. She has learned over the years to find balance with the food she eats and not over indulging. Zoe also gave credit to her spouse Marco for his support. She mentioned that having a supportive spouse who’s compassionate helps you deal with the transformation she was facing after giving birth to her twins.
One of the best things Zoe shared with us during the short interview was about how she and her husband work on their marriage. It has stuck with me since last May and I wanted to share it with you guys.
Talk, talk about everything, no assumptions, no reserved feelings, just last night, and I love sharing this because I know this is a good routine where people can get information and feel identified through all of our similarities when it comes tothe challenges that we face. Just last night, Marco says, ‘I understand we’re super busy, let’s practice still connecting, conversations. I don’t care what we’re talking about. If you’re in the bathroom while I’m in the shower, let’s share five things. It could be five anything. ‘ And I love, love that. You just have to constantly keep it open. Just because you’re so tired, you shouldn’t start getting lazy with the most important work in your life, which is your home, your life.
When Zoe left the room we all talked about we loved that tip so much and how we were planning to use it in our own marriages.
You can see Zoe as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opening in theaters on May 5th, 2017.
