How to Successfully Recycle a Computer

October 30, 2017 By Nickida

How to Successfully Recycle a Computer

Once you have finished with an old PC, laptop, or Mac, you might think nothing of dumping it in the trash. However, not only is this damaging to the environment, but it could also pose a risk to your personal data. For this reason, we are going to show you how to recycle a computer successfully.

Return the Device to the Retailer

You might not realize it, but retailers are legally required to help their customers to both safely and responsibly dispose of their electronic items. Often, they will provide a free of charge service to take back the old item when you buy a new device. They can also provide an alternative take-back service. If they cannot provide either service, they will need to contribute towards the cost of the recycling service for the device.

A Computer Recycling Scheme

There are a variety of fantastic computer recycling schemes for you to choose from, which will allow you to dispose of your unwanted device ethically. Most services are available free of charge, and some will also donate the computers to those in need. If the computer is unsalvageable, you can trust they will dispose of the item in an eco-conscious manner.

Wipe the Hard Drive

Of course, before you recycle a computer, you must successfully wipe the hard drive clean. Unfortunately, many people believe their data has been effectively deleted once they empty the Recycling Bin, but the files will remain on your hard drive. We, therefore, recommend turning to the Secure Data Recovery pros who cannot only retrieve your data on your behalf, but they can delete data and destroy the hard drive.

Donate the Device

One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, which is why you should consider donating your old device. Not only is it an ethical way to recycle an old device, but it will also allow another person to benefit greatly from the electronic. Even a broken computer will have usable parts, which can be recycled into other devices. So, if you don’t have a use for the parts, you could always donate the computer to someone who will.

Freecycle the Computer

Freecycling is the online way to donate your old goods to a new home. All you need to do is advertise the device on one of the many websites. It is an ideal solution for those who have a functional computer, and you’ll feel a great sense of satisfaction knowing you have helped another person. Just remember to delete your critical data.

Sell the Device

If the computer is in good condition, you could always put the gadget up for sale. Auction websites will allow you to set the price for the PC, Mac, or laptop, and you could use the money earned towards a new device. For a fast sale, set a realistic price and write a great product description, so someone can quickly take the item off your hands.
