When the package arrived with the dvd/cd to review, I hadn’t told the kids yet about it or that they would be getting to watch it. We are very familiar with Rachel Coleman from seeing her doing songs from her Signing Time series on Noggin which is now Nick Jr. When I showed them the dvd and told them that they were going to help me with the review they were super exited, however I believe they were expecting to see some of the the stuff they were used to and not something brand new. My daughter -5 and my son -4; are in love with Rachel and the TreeSchoolers. We got the package on Saturday and they watched it five times on that day alone.
Almost immediately my kids seemed to enjoy the program. The dvd had an episode titled “A Rainy Day” and the theme song for the show grabbed their attention right away. The theme introduces you to Rachel and the cast of TreeSchoolers in a very catchy and up beat tune. I have even chimed in with the song when my kids are watching it or if they just burst out in song. The TreeSchoolers include Penny, Simon, Abacus Finch, Chroma Chameleon, Issac Newt, Abigail Nightingale, The Firefly Hue, Bongo and Tomas (you’ll love him). Each one of them bring their own special flair to the show and by the end you too will have a favorite like us. My son likes Bongo and my daughter Penny, but me I like Tomas the best. He is a fun loving toucan.
This episode mainly teaches the kids about weather and how weather affects their lives. They learn about how weather affects how they dress and what they do. They even get to learn a few signs for weather. What I loved most about the program is that although its geared towards preschool its very family friendly and I think kids up to age 10 maybe would stop and take a listen. My daughter especially loved the song about lighting and thunder and she doesn’t even realize she’s learning something new because it was so much for her. She even added her own dance steps to the song. After watching it twice she had tons of great questions for us about lighting and thunder and that’s the other great thing about this program, if you homeschool of even if you don’t, it opens up doors for learning and questions from your kids. My son loved their version of Itty Bitsy Spider. They used the song to encourage kids no never give up and to continue to try. What a great message in a small song.
The CD is just great it has all the songs from the show even the theme song and it also includes the instrumentals as well. It was fun listening to the kids sing the words they remembered when the instrumentals were playing. We’ve already put the cd in our car for trips with the kids so they have something to listen to that we are comfortable with. I highly encourage you to grab the activity kit and have some fun with your kids and Rachel and the TreeSchools and make sure you get your little one ready for preschool by checking out the site. Our family enjoyed spending time with the TreeSchoolers learning about weather concepts, problem solving, rhyming, sign language, classification, storytelling, persistence, kindness, and courage. We are sure your family will enjoy it as well.
