Mercer Mayer’s Little Critters Book Review

You’re probably very familiar with Little Critter and if you’re not, Mercer Mayer has been writing and illustrating stories about Little Critter since 1975. I was provided two new Little Critter faith-based books; Being Thankful and We All Need Forgiveness.

About We All Need Forgiveness:

In We All Need Forgiveness, Little Critter is glad he has such nice friends who forgive him when he makes mistakes. But when one of his friends accidentally does something that affects him, Little Critter gets upset and stays angry at his friend for a while. But Little Critter’s pals teach him that saying “it’s okay” helps the person who acted up—and it helps him feel better much sooner.

Just like Mama says, “As God forgives, we must forgive each other.” Based on Matthew 6:14, Little Critter learns why forgiveness helps heal the one who does the forgiving just as much as the one who needs forgiveness.

My Thoughts:
Forgiveness it seems like such an easy concept but it’s one of the most difficult things to deal with, even as adults we struggle with forgiving. The book follows Little Critter on what seems to be the worst day anyone could possibly be having and he’s so upset with everything. He makes a big mistake and he wants his friends to forgive him but he thinks they’ll stay mad with him like he did with them when they made mistakes. A little chat with his mom reminded him that we all need forgiveness like God forgave us. In the end he learns that its better to offer forgiveness to others so when you need it they will give it to you. It’s a great story that I loved sharing with my children because they get upset all the time with each other, their friends, even their father and I. This book is the perfect gift for children 3-8 years old.

About Being Thankful

In Being Thankful, Little Critter isn’t gettinganything he wants. Gator gets cool brand-new sneakers, while Little Critter is stuck with his boring blue ones. Tiger’s dad has a boat—but not Little Critter’s dad. And even at the ice cream shop, Little Critter can’t enjoy his chocolate ice cream cone because he would rather have a huge ice cream sundae instead. But on a trip to the farm, Grandma shows Little Critter why thankfulness is so important and helps make any situation seem so much happier.

Based on Psalm 107:1, this book will show children what gratitude is and why we should be thankful for all of the blessings God has given us.

My Thoughts:
“I’m not raising ungrateful kids” my husband said. It’s his favorite phrase when he wants to reminds that kids that they are not being thankful for what they have. We’ve all been there and done that. Don’t act like you haven’t cause you probably have at least once in your life. I even have to remind myself that I have so much to be thankful for at times. It’s easy to see what someone else has and wish it was yours. This book serves as the perfect reminder to remain thankful at all times and not just once a year. I loved sharing the story with my kids and you are going to love sharing it with your little one as well.
