Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff Talks Guardians of the Galaxy
During the D23 Expo we had a lot of amazing experiences, after the whirlwind Live Action Panel we were all stoked. We saw a newly added interview on our schedule to speak with a Josh Snow about the expo. We were all confused since we had already interviewed someone with D23. We were whisked away behind the main stage in a secret and put on tweet restriction. We sat down in a small room with chains surrounded by curtains and it was there we learned the truth. There was no Josh Snow, instead, we were speaking with Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff.
The ladies had just gotten off the stage following the Marvel Live Action reveal so we were super excited to see what information we could get about the upcoming release. Of course, they were tight lip about Infinity War but they did share a lot with us about their roles in Guardians. We asked about the reception they just received on the stage after the crowd saw the clip for Infinity War.
I mean, it was just, it’s just, it felt electric to have like 7,000 people passionate about something that you’re involved with in some way, and it’s just like totally different sensations to anything I’ve ever experienced. It felt electric. – Karen Gillan
Talking The Guardians Ride at Disneyland
I shared a bit about the new Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout ride in my Summer of Heros post earlier this summer. We asked the ladies about how it felt to be part of the ride.
Ah, that’s really fun. And you have to maybe not eat too much before, because it will be like up and down, it’s like your organs like are lifted up and then come down. Yeah, it’s really crazy. It’s safe because you stay in the seat. You can’t fall, but it’s just, it’s amazing. And it’s really fun with the story that James Gunn wrote. And you see the collector, Benecio Del Toro. I’m really happy to be a part of it. – Pom Klementieff
Talking About Mantis
We talked to the ladies about Mantis, she’s new to the Marvel family and the Guardians. It’s natural we were interested in learning about what could be next for the character. We picked up with her growth from Guardians 2 to Infinity War.
PK : You know it happens kind of like not long after Guardians 2, so it’s not like she evolved that much. Let me think. Maybe there is like more confidence, I’m not sure.
KG : I feel like your character has to face a lot of her fears, like what we were doing the other day, like she’s being forced into, because you seemed like you were nervous to do things in the film.
PK : Yeah, it’s true, like my character in real life. I was upset. I was like I don’t think I can do it. And my lines were kind of the same, you know, I can’t do it. And then I did it, and it worked out well. I think yeah, she–she has a new family, you know. I mean, by the end of the movie, she has a family and it’s something that she didn’t know before, so she has much more to do in this anyway, you know.
Enjoying the Fans
Guardians of the Galaxy has garnered a nice cult following. Fans of the movies are loyal and committed to not just the movie but the music that has also earned its own popularity. We chatted briefly with the ladies about the fans and attending the premieres.
For me, I like going to London and doing the premiere for the film there was amazing, just because I’m from the U.K. It was like going home to my home turf, and then I recognize all the people there. They were like woo hoo, and I was like yes. So that was cool. – Karen Gillan
The New Nebula?
By now you should have definitely seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in this movie we see a different side to Nebula. We asked Karen if we could expect to see a new Nebula moving forward.
Definitely, yes. Because I mean, this story very much revolves around her father and you know, everybody has an agenda to deal with her father, but I think no one more than Nebula, because of all of the torment that he’s clearly put her through. So, you know, this is going to be like almost like an emotional explosion for her, I think. – Karen Gillan
Favorite Character Traits
We talked a bit about the female characters in the film and how they hoped they helped influence young girls. We finished by asking about their favorite character traits.
KG : Favorite trait, I really like the fact that my character can fight so well, and I really like that she is just like riddled with rage. I mean, it’s just overflowing, it’s just the most rage ever, and she’s got serious daddy issues which is just like the cool feel for the rage, and I just like embodying that.
PK : I love her innocence, you know. It’s kind of refreshing, and it brings a lot of funny moments, too, because she doesn’t know, you know. She she tries things and she discovers things and it’s kind of funny, it’s kind of funny to play, you know. It’s like an animal a little bit. I like, you know, the fact that she’s, I don’t know, weird, yeah.
Biggest Challenge to Filming
As you can imagine there are so many challenges to filming, during my GOTG Vol 2 I’d share about the make up process for several of the actors. Karen opened up about that was most challenging to her.
The biggest challenge for me is probably the makeup process, just because it’s really intense. I mean, it takes about 4 hours in the morning to get ready, and I’m like, I get up at like two or three o’clock in the morning and go there, and then they like stick skin on my face. It’s so cool, you know, the way I turn out, that it’s so worth it, but like it’s a challenge to get up at that time and go through that on a daily basis. – Karen Gillan
Empowering Women Through Film
We finished by talking to the ladies about how it feels to be empowering female characters and they had a lot to share with us. “I feel like it’s about time. I mean, we’ve been craving this for a long time, and with everyone in the Marvel universe, all the amazing women and also Wonder Woman, I mean, it’s just like it feels like there’s a real movement.” stated Karen Gillan. Pom talked about how she couldn’t wait for Captain Marvel giving a nod to fellow Marvel actress Brie Lawson. They both agreed that they loved that the character are also very different. Pom wrapped up by saying:
What I love is also is the costumes that we wear, they’re not too revealing. They’re not too sexy and it’s great, too, because sometimes in superhero movies, it’s like oh, you’re gonna wear a bikini and fight. Ah, okay. It doesn’t really make sense, you know. – Pom Klementieff
