How to Homeschool Your Kids on a Budget

March 6, 2020 By Nickida

Homeschooling can be extremely beneficial for your child, giving them an enriching learning experience that is perfect for those who are struggling in mainstream schools. Not only this, but homeschooling can also allow you to streamline your children’s education and boost their grades while giving kids the freedom to learn in a way that suits them. Although you might believe that homeschooling is expensive for parents, this guide will show you how you can teach your kids at home on a budget.

Save on School Supplies

One of the biggest expenses of homeschooling is the supplies that you need to invest in to provide your kids with the best education possible. Where public schools usually pay for this equipment for your child, when they are homeschooled, it will be you that is bearing the brunt of the cost. However, this should not put you off teaching your child at home, and there are many ways to save on school supplies. These include buying products in the sales and buying used products online or from your local second-hand store. Not only this, but you should look around for discount codes, which could allow you to get large percentages off your purchases. For instance, Staples coupons allow you to buy a large range of necessary school supplies, from folders to printer ink, for a fraction of the original cost.

Use Free Online Resources

The internet is the best place to find resources to aid your child’s learning. Rather than paying out for extensive software applications and textbooks, you should replace these with free internet resources. Many websites have been established especially for homeschooled children, and these contain many different games, worksheets, and other resources that are tailored towards the homeschool curriculum and your kid’s future examinations. The best websites for homeschooled children include k12 and Starfall. You should also consider visiting your local library to use their free textbooks or online software, as it will contain an abundance of free resources that you can use to satisfy your child’s passion for learning.

Go on Field Trips Close to Home

You may believe that to give your children the experiences that they would have at school, you have to travel on lots of field trips to far-off destinations. However, constant traveling can be expensive, especially if you are looking to visit overnight or for a couple of days. Although it is important to give your kids a hands-on and immersive approach to learning, there are many historic sites and museums across the country that can help to teach your kids about certain topics. For instance, instead of choosing to visit the Smithsonian museum in Washington D.C., why not look for town or state museums in your area?

Set Up a Homeschooling Group

Many of the groups and activities that homeschooled children can choose from can be expensive, especially if your child wants to try more than one extra-curricular activity. Although homeschooling groups can help you to save money with group discounts on field trips and lessons, setting up your homeschooling group with a small group of moms can help you to share the costs of homeschooling while ensuring that your child can get the best experience possible.
