Eco Friendly Laundry Products by Eco Nuts
Before having children I never really paid much attention to the laundry products we were using. My husband and I weren’t brand loyal at all. We brought whatever was on sale and when I started to coupon it got worst. When we first had our first child I started using laundry soap specifically for babies. Usually those detergents cost more than what we used but I wanted to make sure it was safe for my kids skin. We continued using special detergent with all our kids and now that our youngest isn’t quite a baby anymore we switched to using the regular detergent we used with our clothing. I immediately noticed the detergent I used was causing skin irritations on our older kids. It was time to find something new so when Eco Nuts reached out to me to try their eco-friendly laundry products I jumped at the chance.
Eco Nuts sent me a few of their products to review and share my thoughts. I’d never heard of Soap Nuts before so I was very excited to see how the product looked and how it would work. I received a box of the Eco Soap Nuts, a bottle of Organic Liquid Laundry Detergent, sample packets of Baby Laundry Powder and a set of Four Plain Wool Dryer Balls.
Wondering what Eco Nuts are? Eco Nuts Soap Nuts are a berry shell that naturally contains soap. They grow on the Sapindus mukorossi (Soap Berry) tree in the Himalayas. The natural soap found in these berries is called saponin. Saponin is a natural cleaner that works as a surfactant, breaking the surface tension of the water to penetrate the fibers of your clothing, lifting stains from the fabric, and leaving dirt suspended in the water that is rinsed away.
So you can imagine I was a little skeptical about how these Eco Soap Nuts would work but I followed the directions to a tea. I put about five of the nuts into the little sack that comes in the box. That is good for one load. Oh and I should note that Eco Soap Nuts are HE Washer safe. Eco Nuts Soap Nuts are gentle on both clothes and skin, making them ideal for those with sensitive skin, eczema, allergies and psoriasis. Because they are so mild, they are perfect for baby clothes and even cloth diapers. This is a huge plus for us because our kids all have sensitive skin. Regular laundry detergent bothers three of our for children’s skin so we needed something very mild but something that would get the job done. Although this product is called Eco Soap Nuts, it’s actually a berry so it’s nut allergy safe. However when trying a new product always do a sample test first.
Eco Soap Nuts are also great for saving money. These double as detergent and fabric softner so you automatically save money there. However the 100 load box sells for $9.99 on the Eco Soap Nuts website. Compared to top laundry detergent brands you can save at least 50% versus buying the bottles. Be sure to also review the handy guide inside the box because it tells you all about the product and also gives you a great visual on when to discard of your Eco Soap Nuts and replace them. The pouches can be reused a few times before they need to be replaced.
If you are using a HE front loading machine then Eco Nuts recommends you use their Organic Liquid Laundry Soap instead of the Soap Nuts. They both work well with HE machines but they do believe this one is more efficient. I used both of these products to see just how well they worked versus the expensive “special” detergent we were using for our kids clothing. First I had to resist my urge to over use like I do with other detergents because I already knew that Soap Nuts has low suds. Suds are not an indication of cleaning power so I had to get that old way of thinking out of my head.
My kids are messy and they love playing outside. Some of their clothing had stains from food or grass. I used the soap nuts in one machine and the liquid detergent in another and they both did an amazing job at getting the clothes clean. They were cleaner than I’ve seen in a long time and I was surprised at how fluffy and bright the fabrics were. It’s like they were refreshed in the wash. They also didn’t have any soapy gunk left over on the clothes from using too much soap. With just two load I am sold. None of my kids had reactions when they wore their clothes after being washed with Eco Soap Nuts, which was my main goal.
If you are purchasing Eco Nuts for a baby you can also try their Baby line of products that are 100% natural, gentle and safe to use on cloth diapers.
We also had the opportunity to try the Wool Dryer Balls and I have to say they were so much better than dryer sheets. I do miss having the scent that dryer sheets would have but I prefer the balls because they are so much easier to manage. When I open a box of dryer sheets for the first time and use them they are great but then it’s open to the air, they lose the scent and they start to discolor sometimes. Eco Nuts recommends using all four dryer balls with a load of laundry but I used two per load and the clothes were perfect in the end. Plus I am saving lots of money, no buying dryer sheets for a while and no more pesky old sheets to get rid of at the end of drying. It’s a win for me.
Overall I have to say that I loved using these eco-friendly laundry products from Eco Nuts. They were just as good and in some instances better than other laundry products we have used in the past. All the other things are added bonuses in my opinion.
What about you, have you tried Eco Soap Nuts before?
