Disney Descendants Movie Review

It’s premiere night on Disney Channel.  The highly anticipated Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants premieres tonight on the Disney Channel at 8 PM.  I’ve been waiting for this movie for at least a year, I found out about it online and it immediately drew me in.  During my press trip last month I the opportunity to screen the movie and interview director/choreographer Kenny Ortega about the film.

Since seeing the movie I’ve been so excited about everyone else getting to see this movie.  It’s awesome.  If you’re a fan of musicals then you would most definitely love this movie.  I really like the concept of all these characters we love and love to hate having kids and seeing a second generation.  This film is about second chances and following your own destiny despite what people think you should do.  The villain kids are expected to be bad and horrible but the moment they get to Auradon Prep their destinies start to change.  You see them all transform and become the people they want to be and not what their parent’s expect or what the citizen of Auradon think they will be.

The movie also has a love story but there is one quick kiss between two characters.  It lasts about 3 seconds max.  The characters dance, hold hands and stare into each other’s eyes but it’s all G-rated so parents you can rest assured it’s a movie your kids can watch over and over again.  Trust me they will want to watch it multiple times.  The movie also tackles issues with self doubt and beauty issues but they do a marvelous job at assuring kids that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and goes beyond your outward appearances.

The movie starts out with Mal narrating then the opening number Rotten to the Core.  Disney released the first six minutes already on Youtube and it’s been a hit.  Check out the first six minutes below:

Meet the Descendants:

I’ve bene tight-lipped about my all time favorite scene in the movie and I won’t share just so I don’t give any spoilers but it’s another reason why I am super excited for you all to see the movie.  We’ll be watching for sure tonight and probably watch the replay as well.  Remember that Descendants premieres tonight at 8 PM on the Disney Channel followed by the series premiere of new series BUNK’D.

All About Descendants:

In a present day idyllic kingdom, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic “Beauty and the Beast”) is poised to take the throne.  His first proclamation:  offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella de Vil, Maleficent the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters.  These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes, including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan.  However, the evil teens face a dilemma.  Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom? 

The fun doesn’t end with the premiere either.  Fans can pick up their copies of Descendants today in stores. The DVD comes with never-before-seen bonus features and a FREE bracelet!  Bonus footage includes:
