South Carolina is one of the most beautiful states I’ve ever seen.  There are so many unique southern cities that I’ve always wanted to visit.  High on my list are Savannah and Charleston.  Both look picturesque and hold such beautiful historical significance.  You can easily feel like you’re taking a step back in time when visiting these areas.  Diaries of a Wandering Lobster shared her list of boutique hotels in Charleston, with a list of great options for anyone traveling to that area.  I’ll be looking to visit one of these this year for sure.

While Maine will always be home, I know the Pine Tree State isn’t my “forever home.” Someday, if and when, I return back to the United States, I’ll be looking for that special place that feels like home, but is new and exciting. In the recent years I’ve begun to explore a bit of the South and I’ve fallen head over heels for the few cities that I have visited. Something tells me I was meant to be a Southern girl.

Charleston, South Carolina is the city that I longed to visit for years but was too scared to book a ticket as I didn’t want to feel disappointed if Charleston did not live up to my expectations. Thankfully I knew the second that I landed at the airport that this little city situated between two rivers is the place for me.

I visited Charleston last January over a long holiday weekend. Although I was only in the Holy City for three days, it gave me a perfect overview of the long history, colorful architecture, and flavorful food. Not to meant the sheer kindness of the locals. Man, I love Charleston!

Charleston is home to a bountiful selection of accommodations ranging from the budget hostel I stayed in, NotSo Hostel, to quaint bed & breakfasts to charming boutique hotels ready to show you a bit of southern charm.

While I’m a budget traveler through and through, I do enjoy a bit of luxury every once in a while. And Charleston is the city to indulge yourself. Hello $100 slice of coconut cake!

Barksdale House Inn Hotel

The Barksdale House Inn Hotel has all the amenities of a hotel in a small bed & breakfast in the heart of historic Charleston. The Hotel was built in a 19th Federal style home that has been updated with all the modern amenities, but still retains that old world charm. A delicious homemade breakfast and nightly cookies are included in the room rates that range from $109 to $229 a night. Who can say no to freshly baked cookies?

Belmond Charleston Place Hotel

Looking for a luxurious splurge? The Belmond Charleston Place Hotel is the perfect romantic getaway as the rooms are quiet, the rooftop pool is heated, and the in-house masseuse is excellent. Want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city? Okay, the only ones hustling around Charleston are the carriage horses! The complementary continental breakfast can even be delivered to your room! How’s that for service? Make sure you check out the nightly wine and cheese tasting too. Nearby you’ll find all the fine dining, museums, and shopping at your doorstep.

HarbourView Inn Hotel

Located just off Waterfront Park, you’ll have epic views of the bay from your own private terrace at the HarbourView Inn Hotel. If your room doesn’t face the waterfront, don’t worry. The Grand HarborView room has a cosy fireplace, walk-in shower, and private balcony. Make sure you sample the wine and cheese in the afternoon and the milk and cookies before bed. The twice-a-week evening guided tours of the Charleston skyline from the rooftop terrace is the talk of the town. Rooms start at $299 a night.
