The Best Digital Entertainment Trends of 2016
Whether we were perfecting our selfies, watching the movies, or even hitting the slots games, it seems that the online realm offered us all the best chance of staying entertained in 2016.
So here’s a run down of which apps, TV shows and websites offered us the biggest laughs, the best payouts, and the most gripping action this year.
Like most people, I’m something of a social media nerd. But whilst Facebook and Twitter used to be fun, it’s the new range of visual social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat that were the biggest hits on the internet.
I’m not the only one who spent hours cracking myself up by using the filters on Snapchat to create some seriously funny selfies, and seeing as everyone from Justin Bieber to Kendall Jenner have had to quit Instagram, it shows just how absorbing and addictive these social media apps have become!
Away from social media, this summer saw many kids – and more than few adults – getting to grips with the augmented reality delights of Pokémon Go. It was a real pleasure to see gamers finally stepping out of their bedrooms to collect these digital creatures in the great outdoors.
And adult gamers also had plenty to enjoy this year with the casino gaming revolution being facilitated by the likes of Lucky Nugget Casino who gave us all access to 2016’s best slots – some with a special seasonal twist!
Emojis were everywhere in 2016 with no message being complete without a personalised selection of smiley faces from celebrities as far ranging as Kim Kardashian and Ellen DeGeneres.
But our TV stars were probably best seen on the endlessly popular streaming services like Netflix who had another fantastic year – with the revival of Gilmore Girls being perhaps the best thing that many of us have seen on television.
It was also interesting to see how our female stars attempted to redress the balance by doing everything from appearing in a remake of Ghostbusters, to the likes of Chelsea Handler doing her best to counter the somewhat backwards political events that we’ve witnessed in 2016.
There have been plenty of other weird phenomena that I haven’t quite got my head around yet. I still haven’t had time to take part in the Mannequin Challenge, and I’m not sure that I’ll ever be ready for the likes of virtual reality!
But seeing as 2016 has delivered plenty of funny selfies, online slots games, and riveting television, then it’s been another great year for digital entertainment!
