Last year during the holidays I read about a preschooler that ran off from a family function in Pennsylvania.  The headline read “Search for Missing Boy with Autism Continues,” it’s hard to imagine that two years ago I wouldn’t have noticed it at all.  I don’t believe these things are just starting to happen around me but when my son was diagnosed with Autism, I’ve started to notice a lot more.  Parents like myself all over the country are faced with so many different challenges when it comes to raising our special needs kids and it seems that wandering off is one that plagues the Autism community as well.

Since it’s Autism Awareness Month I wanted to share with my readers information about different location trackers that can help with wandering children.  My son has bolted away from me on at least two or three occasions and it was terrifying.  He was still in my line of sight and it made me very scared.  I couldn’t imagine not being able to find my child for any period of time.  AT&T customers can help keep track of their special needs child with the FiLIP 2, this smart locator with voice is geared towards kids ages 4 to 11 years old.

The FiLIP 2 is a watch that can be worn as a cuff or switched to completely close on the end.  I would recommend using the fully closure clip so your child isn’t constantly pulling at it for any reason.  This particular model comes in two colors; Superhero Blue and Watermelon Red.  Unfortunately the band can not be extended to grow with your child so once they outgrow this size you will have to find something different to track your child’s location.

FiLIP 2 uses a unique blend of GPS, GSM, and Wi-Fi to help parents locate their child both indoors and out.  You can set up to five SafeZones and receive a notification when your child enters or leaves the SafeZone.  It’s easy for your child to call one of their pre-programmed contacts from the device.  They just scroll through their list of contact and push the black button on the side to call.  Calls are completed using the built-in speaker on the device.  The FiLIP fits wrists from 4.8″ to 5.6″.

Setting up was a breeze, you do need to download the FiLIP app on your cell phone, the app works on iOS and Android.  Once downloaded you create an account providing all the details required to get everything synced with the FiLIP and your cell phone.

The app provides parents an easy and intuitive way to set up and manage the device. View location maps, create and manage SafeZones, manage and set contacts, and send text messages to your child all from your Internet–enabled device.

The FiLIP 2 costs $149 on AT&T’s website, you must be a current AT&T customer to qualify to use this device with your current plan.  Be sure to check with your local AT&T agent to ensure you plan works with the FiLIP 2 device.
