I am always looking for ways to get involved with giving to others. Growing up in Trinidad my family lived without running water and indoor plumbing, but my father worked and had a huge garden to provide for us all. We were not rich but we had more that other families in our neighborhood and my parents were always generous with others. Seeing them share like that has built in me a need to share with others so I was thrilled to get on board with a project like the Champion for Kids Pack A Sack Project with #CBias. On April 20th Champion for Kids will host their flagship event Abbott Nutrition RazorFest. It’s a free event for families held at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The 9th annual event, includes fun zones, games, music, mascots, giveaways, health zones, fitness activities, nutrition education and more. The event concludes with the University of Arkansas Razorback Red-White game! The ultimate goal is to mobilize those in attendance to provide resources and opportunities to benefit children, however the event is not just about the local event in AK but #MobilizingMillions to coordinate donation drives, collect donations to simply make a donation to a local food pantry.
My husband works at a school in DC so it was perfect for us to work with the students and staff members to host a school donation drive collect items for a local food pantry in DC. Organizing a food drive is easier than you think. First we needed to make sure it was okay to collect the food at the school and get approval from the principal. You could do this with your local PTA or in your community, your mom’s group or even if its your family members. Then we created a flyer to advertise the food drive around the school. You can do this by emails, texts or flyers depending on the size of your food drive. Collect your food and drop them off at your desired food pantry. You can choose from state organizations, community organizations, private organizations and churches as long as they are collecting food items to share with families in need. Living in Baltimore there is no shortage of food pantries or families in need. Since we live in Baltimore our donation will go to our local church but the donations we collected and continue to collect at my husband’s job will be donated to a food pantry in that community.
Giving back is so easy to do and you don’t have to have a huge event either. If you just get one other person to join you in and pack a sack and donate is helping Champion for Kids help in their mission to mobilize millions. Every little bit goes a long way and can make a world of difference in a child’s life. You could also make a monetary donation on their site to help the mission. You can also do a SIMPLE Service Project like my family and I are doing and report it so you can be counted in the millions coming together to help. Follow Champion for Kids on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with their events and find ways that you can become more involved with helping others.
We headed to Walmart to pick up the items we were planning to donate in our sack (box). You can check out my Google+ album to see all our shopping trip and the rest of our experience on this project. My family and I hope you join us and the millions of other joining in this project with CFK to Pack A Sack and donate it to a food pantry.
