San Diego is a beautiful city with so much to offer. It’s rich in culture and there’s so much to explore, If you’re planning or considering a move to San Diego I have a few tips that can help make your potential move or your moving plans a little easier. I’ve done the research on places to visit, where to find the good food, local attractions, how to find a place to live, school districts, and a few more gems for making it the easiest move you’ve ever had to make.
Outdoor Adventures in San Diego
Whether you’re single, dating, or moving with a family there is so much to enjoy for people who enjoy the outdoors. San Diego has a lot to offer for nature lovers, start with a day at Balboa Park, I’m sure you’ll have to visit the park a few times to enjoy all that it has to offer. The Botanical House has over 2100 individual plants, you could spend hours in there while also admiring the pond with lotus and lilies.
La Jolla is an upscale seaside community with lots of fine dining, shopping, and more, but if you’re up for checking out some sea lions and walrus, look for a rocky cove in this area of the city for seaside fun. You can even find a few beaches to explore as well. San Diego has 70 miles of open coastline, so if you’re a big surfer this is also a great area to catch some waves. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the perfect spot to watch the sunset with the family or a special someone. Great for a unique outdoor dining experience.
Unique Dining Experiences With a Rich Mix of Culture
The city’s proximity to Mexico and Spanish past makes for some of the most delicious dishes you will find. According to locals Oscar’s Seafood makes one of the best fish tacos you will ever taste. Campfire might not offer specific meals for kids but their roast your own s’mores are sure to be a winner for any family with kids. Park 101 has a lot of kid friendly options, along with outdoor dining and fire pits, they are also dog-friendly for anyone who wants to bring their doggie friends along for dinner.
San Diego’s craft beer scene is one of the greatest you’ll find. They have over 150 breweries in the city. If you’re a fan of craft beer there are quite a few places you can check out, Trillist has a few options on their ‘16 Quintessential Food and Dining Experiences in San Diego‘ List. I’m not sure how true the claim is but according to diners visiting Phil’s BBQ it’s the best in America. If you’re looking to try something to remind you of home or something new it may be worth the visit. The Baked Bear is on my list because of the custom ice-cream sandwiches alone. If you have a sweet tooth you’ll be visiting The Baked Bear a few times for sure.
Use Zumper to Research Your Choices for Finding the Right Place to Live
Moving to a new city can be stressful, especially when finding a place to live. I remember when we moved out of state and having to look for a new home back then was so hard. Now technology and websites like Zumper makes it so much easier. According to Zumper 52% of the households in San Diego are renter occupied, however recent trends show at least a 1% decrease in rent prices for one and two bedroom apartments.
Zumper allows users to find available rentals in real time, you can apply and have your credit checked right on their website. Making it an easy and one stop shop when looking for a place to live. You can even save your preferences so you get alerts immediately when a rental meets your needs.
Best School Districts for Families
Families moving to the area always have schools to consider. When we were looking for a home to purchase the schools had a big factor in our choices. According to Niche these are the top six school districts in San Diego.
- San Dieguito Union High School District: Rated A+ – 10 schools – 13,128 students.
- Poway Unified School District: Rated A+ – 38 schools – 36,450 students.
- Coronado Unified School District: Rated A+ – 5 schools – 3,057 students.
- Carlsbad Unified School District: Rated A+ – 16 schools – 11,428 students.
- San Marcos Unified School District: Rated A – 20 schools – 21,007 students.
- Grossmont Union High School District: Rated A- – 15 schools – 16,760 students.
Local Attractions
To round off my list of things to consider I’m adding a few local attractions for you to add to your list things you must do in San Diego. Visit the San Diego Zoo is a must especially for families. Visit the USS Midway Museum to learn about the longest serving aircraft carrier. San Diego Old Town is the site of the first European Settlement, it’s a state historic park filled with a rich history and look at the past.
