I shared earlier in the week that we were starting to use a product called Thumbuddy to Love to get our daughter to stop sucking her thumb. You can read about that post here.
What can I say about week one, it was a very trying week. We all have to get used to the idea of continuously making sure that Kay is wearing her Thumbuddy. With her still in school it has been a little harder because I think she sucks her finger there, so I followed a tip from the book and wrapped a band aid on her finger for when she is in school. If she comes home with a dry band aid she gets a treat and a sticker for her book. She hasn’t earned a sticker yet this way. I guess its hard because she has to wash her hands in school.
At home we are doing great. She only takes her Thumbuddy off when she washes her hands and when she is eating. Plus her brother Trey is always on thumb watch. He makes sure we know if she takes it off and is sucking her finger. I am getting much better of ignoring her batting eyes and soft voice asking to take it off. At night I make sure she has it on when she goes to bed and if I get up during the night I check and make sure its still on and if it’s not then I go back and put it on her thumb again. This weekend was my wedding anniversary so they kids stayed at my parents house on Saturday night and she tried to take advantage of not being around us. I think they did a good job of not letting her suck her thumb and keeping it on her hand.
I know any habit is hard to break and I know this will take patience and time and so I hope we make more progress over the winter break. Here goes week two.
