Join The Fight For a Hunger Free Summer with ConAgra Foods
Disclosure: I worked with The Motherhood on this post, sponsored by ConAgra Foods. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
As a mother of four I try my best to make sure that my children’s need are always met. My children are picky eaters, a habit I think they picked up mainly from me. I do my best to get them to try different foods but I also try to accommodate them when making meals. My main reasoning for changing the way I approached meals came from having the same conversation with my children about wasting food. I heard the words from my own parents and then I was saying it to my own kids. You’ve probably heard of said it before – “You know there are hungry children that would love to have that food!” Words I’ve said quite a few times but never really sat down and fully thought about the meaning before. Finally one day at dinner it really hit home with me and I wanted to have the conversation with my children about food, being wasteful and what it means to really be hungry. One day my husband and I decided to finally have a real conversation with our children about hunger.
One of the first questions we asked our kids was – Do you know what it means to be hungry? We explained to them the different levels of hunger and shared with them how some people don’t get to eat a meal daily we even asked them to not use the word “starving” because while they may be hungry they are or have never felt starvation. During summer months 90 percent of kids in the free or reduced lunch programs in school have limited or no access to those meals they would receive during school. Imagine what it would feel like to be hungry during summer breaks, those kids can’t enjoy the summer like they should when they have to worry about finding a meal. The ConAgra Foods Foundation has been spreading awareness about childhood hunger especially during the summer and in the last five years they have served over 3.8 millions meals to children. ConAgra Foods’ Hunger-Free Summer initiative with Feeding America goal this year is to reach 25% more children than before. This summer, 26 food banks in 18 states will use Hunger-Free Summer grants, funded by the ConAgra Foods Foundation – ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 – to expand their summer feeding program, bringing more healthy meals to more children during the summer.
