Trying to Stop Thumb Sucking

Our Princess Kay is a thumb sucker.  She’s five and in kindergarten and I hoped she would stop on her own but she hasn’t.  None of the ideas people gave us worked and we are really trying to get her to stop sooner than later.  That’s when I came across an item that I hope does the trick.  Its called Thumbuddy to Love.  She has a Ballerina Sue that she puts on her thumb and the goal is that since her finger is covered she won’t be able to suck her finger.  We’ve had it since Saturday (12/8) and so far its been interesting.  My daughter has done everything in her power to find a way for me to take the Thumbuddy off her finger.  She gives me the saddest look in the world and it just makes me feel so horrible but I know that I must persist in getting her to stop.  I will say that so far its been working.  I have to find a way to keep her finger covered when she is at school.  We are working on her keeping it on all through the night since she is such a bad sleeper.  I will continue to blog about her journey of trying to stop thumb sucking.

Kennedi and her Thumbuddy

Keep checking back for updates on Kennedi’s journey and later for my full review of the Thumbuddy.  Please leave some comments to help me stay the course.  I don’t want to break down and stop so your comments along the way encouraging me to keep going can help.

good luck, sometimes when they stop too soon they move on to something else!! My daughter was 7 when I took her to the orthodontist to show here the contraptions she could have in her mouth with prongs. took 1 night to stop!

I have a thumb sucker too. He’s only 16 months. We he was an infant we loved it because he could self-soothe. I really hope he quits on his own. I knew a girl in Middle School that still sucked her thumb. I can’t imagine! Good luck!

My son sucked his thumb but stopped on his own when he was 1yrs old, but my daughter had a pacifier, it was so hard to get her off that. When she was 5 I finally got her to stop with the pacifier. I wish you lick.

HI Nickida, Thank you for sharing! Keep up the good work and praises! When you are doing the calendar with stickers (in the Thumbuddy story book), you might want to encourage her that for so many stars, she gets to go get an ice cream or something special. It helps keep her motivated….she will get it! We are all rooting for her! When she accomplishes it, she gets a diploma printed off the website. Keep us informed. I will personally send her a new Thumbuddy To Love pen too!
    Kind Regards,

Thanks for all the wonderful tips Andrea and I plan to continue to blog about it all the way through. So I’ll be sure to keep you updated with posts. I hope we get her to stop completely before her birthday next June. Thanks for giving me the chance to try this awesome product.

I just came across the thumbuddy too and purchased this for my 5 yr old daughter. It’s supposed to arrive in a couple of days and I hope it helps. Would love to hear your final review, good luck to you guys! We’ve tried a few things now with no success.

Oooh… Good luck with that. Covering the thumb didn’t work for someone I know. She is STILL sucking her thumb at 26yrs of age (only ever in her sleep now though).

Although, a tip from my mum: a type of nail polish that tastes dreadful. Apparently it worked when I was five :)
